Having been allied with the Spanish, Manco Inca rebelled in May 1536 and besieged the Spanish garrison in the city of Cuzco. To end the conflict, the besieged prepared an attack against the headquarters of the Inca emperor, located in the town of Ollantaytambo. The expedition was commanded by Hernando Pizarro and consisted of 100 Spaniards and some 30,000 indigenous allies against an Inca army of 20,000 soldiers.
