Basil I claimed that he commissioned the mosaic of the virgin and child enthroned in Hagia Sophia to replace an original sixth-century mosaic that was destroyed during the Iconoclasm. The mosaic is believed to be a recreation of the original mosaic and bears an inscription that says the pious emperors Michael III and Basil I commissioned the mosaic when the original was destroyed.
