Why was the democratic republic of Congo renamed “Zaire”?

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, changed BACK from Zaire to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a result of General Laurent Kabila taking control of Zaire, thus returning the name to the Democratic Republic of Congo, which it had been previously named prior to 1971
