How were the "new" immigrants that arrived in America in the late 1800s different from earlier waves of immigrants?

Mos of the new immigrants were catholic. There was a huge famine in Ireland and thousands of people started immigrating. The locals were afraid that if these people get political power they would be dictated by the pope or any similar church authority.
