The tariff of 1828 was passed on May 19, 1828 by the US Congress. It was designed to protect northern businesses and industry. The tariff was nicknamed the tariff of abominations because of the hardships it caused the south.

When the tariff was passed, it caused many problems for the south. There was the immediate problem of higher priced goods and then the later problem of not being able to sell the cotton that was collecting due to the fact that the British were no longer coming over to trade on the scale they had before the tariff

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

The tariff sought to protect northern and western agricultural products from competition with foreign imports; however, the resulting tax on foreign goods would raise the cost of living in the South and would cut into the profits of New England's industrialists.
