Hyperventilation causes a decrease in the blood concentration of carbon dioxide, and thus increases the rate of respiration. Causes for hyperventilation include stress, anxiety, certain physical illnesses and higher altitudes. Lightheadedness, dry mouth, tingling in the extremities or fainting may result.
