The phenomenon in which women have seemingly endless housework and child care on top of paid work is referred to by sociologist Arlie Hochschild as second shift. This suggests that, in many cases, women hold down the equivalent of two full-time jobs, for which only one is a paid position. Men may help in varying degrees with second shift but are rarely responsible for nearly the amount of work involved.
