This is the ego-defensive function of attitude. This concept allow a person to hold a belief that is protective of one's self-concept, even if the belief is not true or goes against accepted wisdom. In this case, Nathan is holding onto the notion that he will not receive negative consequences for having too much sugary food, even while diabetic. This is a way of still trying to feel good while acting in a harmful way toward oneself.
