II would say marketing is partly doing a survey of for example demographics of an area or community for a potential business to determine if there are asufficient number of people with a significant income to be able to purchase the goods one wishes to sell and that the goods one wishes to sell are needed by that group of people ie groceries or pharmaceuticals for example.
