It was devastating. American industries were unable to export their products to England, France or their respective allies. Even worse, British goods were still able to be smuggled inside the country through Canadian ports.
However, it also had one accidental benefit: by forcing American industries to sell their products internally, they reduced their dependence on British imports and British trade merchants.
