Tantalus, Greek Tantalos, in Greek legend, son of Zeus or Tmolus (a ruler of Lydia) and the nymph or Titaness Pluto (Plouto) and the father of Niobe and Pelops. He was the king of Sipylus in Lydia (or of Phrygia) and was the intimate friend of the gods, to whose table he was admitted.

Tantalus is a character from Greece's mythology, a good friend with gods and elevated to their level, who was punished, and was therefore placed in a pool of water. Above the pool there was a tree with fruit on low branches, and the punishment consisted in the fact that every time he wanted to reach the fruit, the branches escape, or when he wanted to drink water, the water always receding.
