pessimism is a noun. It refers to a tendency to look at the bad side of everything that happens, see everything as going badly and only see the darker side of things. For instance, if you were stuck in a well, if you were a pessimist, you would think that there was no way out and simply resign yourself to sit there until help arrived on accident.
