In the paragraph the father said "No, son, but you can try again later." Then they dragged the boy (Robert) out of the house ("door") it does show depression because seems to me that the father doesn't want the boy to try again which is the meaning of grooves.

The significance or meaning of this sentence is that the father doesn't want Robert to try so maybe trying is what its all about.
