During Austin's time in Arkansas, his father traveled to Spanish Texas and received an empresarial grant that would allow him to bring 300 American families to Texas called "The Old 300." Moses Austin caught pneumonia soon after returning to Missouri. He left his empresario grant to his son Stephen.

Stephen F. Austin fond a land to settle Americans in Texas in September 1821, on the western bank of Brazos River, approximately 150 miles east of San Antonio. He convinced the Mexican authorities to let his colony stay and that was why could bring the first Amenican families to Texas.
