Fishes are PARAPHYLETIC group of animals. Fishes are considered to be paraphyletic because it does not contain an ancestor for all its descendants. A group is said to be paraphyletic if it consists of the group's last common ancestor and all descendants of that ancestor excluding a few monophyletic group. The group is described as paraphyletic in relation to the excluded group.
