Why were resistance movements often led by southeast asians who had been educated in the west?

Some of the resistance movements were led by people from Southeast Asia who had received their education in the west because the notion of nationhood was not part of their agenda, at first. In the beginning, their primary focus was placed on matters of economic and financial interests and the right of the native people to express their religious beliefs.
