Emperor Constantine was leader of the Roman Empire during it's schism. This created two new empires; Holy Roman Empire (West) and Byzantine Empire (East). Emperor Constantine would lead the Byzantine Empire. The Holy Roman Empire would stay with the Roman Catholic Church, and the Byzantine Empire would create the Eastern Orthodox Church. The capital was built on the Greek city of Byzantium, and Constantine renamed it Constantinople in honor of himself. Within the Byzantine Empire, the Eastern Orthodox Church would become the dominant faith. This is important because Byzantine missionaries brought Christianity and a set language (cryllic alphabet) to Russia.
