For example, potassium has one valence electron and chlorine has 7 valence electrons. So, in order to attain stability potassium will donate its one valence electron to chlorine atom.

This will result in an ionic bond and KCl will be formed as the compound.

Therefore, we can conclude that when electrons are transferred between atoms so that stable electron configurations are achieved, the resultant bonding forces are ionic in nature.
