Why doesn’t a 100 year old tree have just an epidermis on its surface

A 100 year old tree doesn't have just an epidermis on its surface because as the tree grew, it may have developed secondary growth in the stem, forcing other tissue types to the exterior. The tree may also have sustained injuries exposing the interior tissues.
