How were presidential candidates selected under the caucus system

Under the caucus system, it was a much more insular selection process. The congressional delegations would have an informal "meeting" and would simply select the candidate they felt would best represent the party. This process ended up shutting out the voice of the voters, who didn't have any say in the selection process.
