What is the purpose of the introduction in an essay?

I’m stuck between “To explain the main idea to the reader” and “To grab the attention of the reader”

Leaning towards To explain the main idea to the reader...

I'm thinking to explain the main idea because the whole introduction is not about grabbing the attention, that's what the hook is for! But, the entire introduction (hook included) IS made to tell the reader what they are reading! Hope this helps!
