What did the United States government do to compensate the tribes for the large Parcels of land ceded to the government

The government was able to give land to the Indians with the help of the General Allotment Act given in 1887 written by senator Dawes. This act made it possible to divide the Indians land among the Indians. The Indians beneficiaries were allowed to used the land but not to sell or lease it.
