a dynamo.

The dynamo theory is the most accepted theory today for the explaining of the Earth's magnetic field. The dynamo theory states that it is through a fluid (that rotates, convects and is electrically conducting) that is created and maintained a magnetic field around the Earth. It is believed that's what happens also on other planets.
