Rewrite 6*298 as 6(300-2). Mult 300 by 6: result is 1800. Mult -2 by 6; result is -12. Thus, 6*298 = 1800-12 = 1788.

You could also estimate the answer by mult. 6 and 300. The result is, of course, 1800.
