Nutrients are transferred to the fetus from maternal blood via the placenta. The placenta is a structure that develops during pregnancy that is attached to the uterine wall and to the fetus via another structure known as the umbilical chord. Both wastes and nutrients are transferred via the process of diffusion from blood vessels from the mother and the fetus.
