Many people did not want to recognize Texas because Texas allowed slavery. Most Northern American politicians were against any action that would encourage slavery. Relation with Mexico would also be hurt if Texas was recognized. (Mexico - owes US money) The Morfit Report hurt too. (huge debt) I hope this helps you.
