One of the most important causes of the American Revolution was this idea that the British parliament was implementing taxes on the American colonists without a representative from the colonies being there. This fear of a strong central government resulted in the United States creating an extremely weak central government when they became independent.

When the Articles of Confederation were passed, the central government had very few powers. The central government could not tax, force states to follow federal laws, etc.
