Increased trade with other countries made this a time of prosperity and wealth for some Chinese people. The wealthy enjoyed playing games like chess and cards and the invention of printing allowed better communication. The scholar-gentry focused their wealthy on educating their children for government positions. Education became as important as owning land in China. As a result of large dowries families preferred sons to daughters. Women enjoyed few rights in Chinese society.
