The Battle of the Coral Sea fought between May 4 to May 8, 1942 between the United States and the Imperial Japanese aircraft carriers during World War II. It was a major (and the first) naval battle between the two countries in which the naval fleets did not come into contact but was instead fought by the aircraft carriers of both sides. With the losses of the Japanese during the battle, Japan's advance to seize Australia was halted.
