Before carbohydrates are absorbed, the enzymes sucrase, maltase and lactase digest disaccharides into monosaccharides in the small intestine. Sucrase breaks down sucrose into glucose and fructose, maltase breaks down maltose into two glucose, and lactase breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose.
