With the (horrific) 3/5 Compromise, which stated that slaves would be counted as a special type of property in which each slave was considered 3/5 of a person when determining the number of representatives for a particular state.

It was resolved with the 3/5 compromise, which stated that an African American was counted as 3/5 of a person for population purposes.
