The answer is keratinization. This is sometimes called as cornification action. It is the development of dead, protective, and superficial layers of cells occupied with keratin. Happens on all bare skin surfaces. Cells transfer from stratum basale to stratum or in other words deep to superficial in a period of 15-30 days.
