Ty has read two myths, each from a different culture, about a great flood that destroyed the Earth. Read the summaries. In the first myth, the world was destroyed because the people had become very wicked and had strayed from religious behavior. God warns one righteous couple and tells them how they can be saved. Consequently, they build a great boat that saves them, their family, and the animal kingdom. In the second myth, the Earth floods because it is thrown into a great ocean by a demon. The Earth and its greatest sages are saved by a saintly king who recognizes the gods’ instructions as they are issued from the mouth of what appears to be a fish. Ty asked himself the following question before reading the myths: What characteristics do the myth-tellers believe are important? What might Ty conclude is important to the tellers of both myths? A. respecting family B. retaining the king’s power C. being intelligent D. obeying the words of gods
