Scientists believe that the Abert's and Kaibab squirrels are examples of speciation because it is believed they were separated by plateau erosion that separated the forests and isolated the Kaibab population. This event caused speciation because the squirrels underwent geographic isolation.

They believe they are examples of speciation due to only being found in those areas or around the area. Likely due to separation because of plateau erosion possibly cutting them off from forests.
