Even though there were African-Americans fighting on both sides, most of them supported the Patriots' cause of trying to dismantle British supremacy and achieve independence. According to some reports, among all the people who volunteered to fight for the Patriots, there were more African-Americans than white people. Slaves were recruited on both sides, but they had to fight. In return, some of them were promised freedom or some other kinds of compensation.
