is 18 feet longer than the width w of the yard, what is the
area of the yard, in square feet?

Length = x + 18

Width = x

Perimeter = 72

72 = 2(x + 18) + 2x

72 = 2x + 36 + 2x

72 = 4x + 36

72 - 36 = 4x

36 = 4x

36/4 = x

9 = x

The width is 9 feet.

The length is 9 + 18 or 27 feet.

Area = length • width

A = 27(9)

A = 243 ft^2
