m + f = 12,000
f = m + 2,000
m + m + 2000 = 12000
2m + 2000 = 12000
2m = 12000 - 2000
2m = 10000
m = 10000/2
m = 5000 <== there were 5000 males
f = m + 2000
f = 5000 + 2000
f = 7000 <== there were 7000 females
