I believe the correct answer is that
they raided and stole from people across the region.
When they came to East Anglia in 865, they wanted to conquer the region so they started pillaging the area. Only 4 years later did king Edmund raise an army to fight off the Danes, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The Danes won and conquered the area and certainly did not want a peaceful settlement.
