During an exothermic process [heat flows from the system to the surroundings]. Exo roughly translates to outside, and thermic refers to heat. Heat is released from a system to its surroundings during an exothermic reaction, so the system would actually feel warm to the touch. The opposite of this is called and endothermic reaction.
