President Richard Nixon made it a practice to audio tape all conversations in his office. After burglars broke in to the office of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate office complex, it was suspected that Nixon knew about the burglary. If he did, it would be relevant in his impeachment trial. The House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the audio tapes for the relevant period, plus paper documents.
