1) I was a slave, the marriage would give him no power to protect me from my master
2) And then, if we had children, I knew they must "follow the condition of the mother."


The rights of the master over the slave reigns supreme over the rights of the husband of the slave. "follow the condition of the mother" if the mother is a slave, so will the children be.
