Why did the importance of religion decline throughout the colonies from the 17th to the 18th century?

During the 17th and 18th centuries there arose a newfound emphasis on Science. Scientific laws, facts, and logic often conflicted with religious doctrine and the whole concept of faith. This period was therefore referred to as the Enlightenment.
