Suttee, also known as sati, was practiced by the Hindus in India, when the wife also was also cremated in the funeral pyre when the husband died. This has now been abolished since 1829. If I am not mistaken this tradition was not allowed to be practiced when the english came to India. They were there to rule over the Indians. This was all happening in Ghandis time.
