Even though Anthony is a prisoner on death row, he still has the right to be heard of. Maybe the reason why he wanted to abolish the capital punishment is that he wanted to have a second chance to change his life and to make it better. Or maybe Anthony didn't really deserve in the prison because maybe he is innocent at all and that maybe he was only being framed up, and that's why he is defending himself through arguing about the capital punishment. Also, Anthony might be valuing the true essence of life, that it shouldn't be taken away from a person by another person. After all, all humans have the right to live and to fight for their life.
