Diabetes mellitus type 1 is a very common cause of ketoacidosis. When glucose are not available for cells use, the body make use of fat instead. The use of fat by the body leads to the production of ketone bodies which are the by products of the reaction. Excess ketone bodies in the blood leads to ketoacidosis, a situation in which the pH level of the blood drop significantly.
