An example of psychological reactance is when you tell a subordinate that he or she must turn in work by the deadline, the subordinate complies but turns in shoddy work.

That statement is false
Psychological reactance usually happen when there is limited options (but still more then one) available for the options and that person is free to do any actions in order to get what they want.
In this particular case, the subordinate basically has no option at all, so that person do not possess enough freedom to conduct a psychological reactance
