What is the difference between a narcotic and a controlled substance?

the difference between a narcotic and a controlled substance is that the latter (second term) is categorized by schedules. some of the drugs in schedule I, II, and III contains the common illegal drugs such as heroin, marijuana, ecstacy.

it's important to know that not all controlled substances are illegal. on the flip side with narcotics, however, narcotics are opiods that relieve pain and dull the senses of pain.
