Before converting to Christianity, the Axumite empire's religious system would best be described as polytheistic. Their empire stretched from the Mediterranean to Ethiopia and across the Indian ocean. Many peoples and many cultures and subcultures thrived under their rule. A ruler might petition Ares, Zeus, and Poseidon for protection across the open seas and success in battle.
