It was an example of democracy because it was among the first colonies to establish policies of tolerance since they didn't prosecute anyone ever based on religious beliefs which drew in even more migrants. They asked the king to have their governors changed when they saw that their governor was corrupt, and they were one of the colonies that supported the war of independence and the constitution.
