The term War Hawk originally refers to members of the United States Chamber of Representatives of the Twelfth Congress of the United States, who supported the war against the United Kingdom in the War of 1812.

Later the term continued to be used, as an Americanism to indicate an aggressive political state. The pacifists, whose symbol are the doves, are the opposite to the hawks.
